VVA Rallies for Opportunity, Sustainability, Equality at “We Are Virginia” Gathering in Richmond

FAIRFAX, Va. (Jan. 13) – Voice of Vietnamese Americans joined dozens of progressive organizations and individuals in Richmond on Wednesday, Jan. 11, to urge legislators to make and protect smart investments in Virginia’s future.
“Virginia is home to tens of thousands of hard-working Vietnamese Americans," Genie Nguyen, VVA President, said. "VVA joins the ‘We Are Virginia’ coalition to stand up for a smart approach to strengthening Virginia’s future for residents of all backgrounds.”
The “We Are Virginia” coalition, which pushes for opportunity, sustainability and equality, kicked off its advocacy campaign, Jan. 11. Supporters rallied in Capitol Square as Virginia legislators entered their General Assembly offices on the session’s opening day.

“When it comes to fighting for access to healthcare, education and other basic services, we cannot let extreme agendas and special interests drown out the voices and needs of hard-working Virginians," Ms. Nguyen said.

Supporters also delivered goodie bags to the offices of all 140 legislators. The bags included a flashlight to represent the coalition’s push to shine a light on voting rights and a surgical mask to support a health-care exchange.
The coalition, led by the Virginia Civic Engagement Table, consists of separate advocacy and nonprofit organizations, such as VVA, Virginia Organizing and Sierra Club.
